Shark Tank: Day 4 Presentations

Today we started the presentations for our Shark Tank contestants. The students built their presentations using Google Slides and stood in front of their classes and argued why their idea was the best idea for the sharks to invest in. The first three presentations were entertaining and filled with excellent content as well as sharp presentation skills. Fresnel lenses, hovercrafts, and Lego computers:

The students are scoring each presentation using a basic presentation rubric and offering suggestions for improvement as well as highlighting what they like about each presentation.

Today's presentations addressed each one of the Technology Education course competencies:

Technology Education Competencies, Sanborn School District, 2015-2016
  • Develop an understanding of the core concepts of power technology.
  • Develop an understanding of the attributes of design and engineering design.
  • Develop an understanding of the role of troubleshooting, research and development, invention and innovations and experimentation in problem solving.
  • Develop an understanding of and be able to select tools, materials and equipment used in career and technology education.

Shark Tank: Days 2-3

Students have started building their Shark Tank presentations today. Some are making PowerPoints, others are using Google Slides, and a select few are choosing to sketch out a poster.

Today students are reflecting on their projects, researching the specifics of their proposal, and figuring out the best way to share their ideas with their classmates next week.

Students have the independence to choose their own team, best methods of presenting information, and how they plan to manage their time during these two weeks.

Shark Tank: Day 1

Students began their innovative brainstorms today in the library for the start of the Shark Tank project.

While students had access to the library PCs and their own smart phones, several groups elected to use the Samsung tablets for their brainstorming.

Overheard in the library today:
  • let's make a grill out of my old Jeep grill!
  • how much wood will we need to get this boat to actually float?
  • what size engine are we looking at to get the trike going 40 or so?
  • how big should the hidden drawer be?
  • where should the chimney go?
  • how about a tire we can change while the car is still driving?
  • I want to invent something to make me the youngest millionaire in NH! I'd be happy with $100,000.00.
  • what are tasers made of?
  • if we make a speaker phone case, how will it be shaped so it still fits in our pocket?
  • what kind of attachments could we add to our bikes?
  • the engine I was thinking of costs $450: we will have to rethink this idea!
  • how big would the hovercraft have to be?
  • do you think we could invent an engine that runs on water?
  • square pencils won't get us rich!
  • how do we hook the sensors up to our phones?
  • why do we need a robot bear?
  • I'm going to need to sleep on this!
My favorite kind of day... a lot of open ended inquiry from our students.
